With new banners arriving almost weekly from one our 32 partner art museums, we’re often asked how their banners go from city streets to our website and on to your walls.
Often when banners arrive, it’s like the proverbial Christmas morning. We open up boxes of banners without any knowledge of what they will look like. We’re often delighted by what Santa brings and like any lucky child on Christmas, we immediately begin cataloguing our good fortune: banners in great, sellable condition either begin the flattening process or are boxed carefully, all other banners are set aside in our recycling area to be sorted out later. Then, we’ll snap a few photos of our new prize possessions and share them with our colleagues, making sure that we identify the image reproduced on the banner so that we can contact the image rights holders to request additional copyrights allowing us to sell the banners on behalf of our museum partners.
Next time: Part II: The Sometime Long and Twisted Tale of Securing Image Rights.
