Summary
Austrian artist Gustav Klimt invokes the Art Nouveau spirit of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec on current banners from the Neue Galerie. Klimt's "The Black Feather Hat" is a fin-de-siecle masterpiece from the languid lines of the woman's face to the dramatic flourish of her grand hat. Featured on just 5 banners, the work comes across beautifully on the large scale of a banner. The thickness and texture of the paint is visible, and the shades of white that incorporate blues and greys are cool and sophisticated. The perfect banner for someone dramatic and enigmatic.
Description
Gustav Klimt is known for his richly painted works, detailed decorative surfaces, and ability to capture the evocative, and provocative. The sensual nature of his works and his unique, personal symbolism made him something of a controversial figure during his day. Given the erotic nature of many of his works, his portraits of women often drew speculation about illicit trysts.
Klimt’s Black Feather Hat is featured to full effect on banners from the Neue Galerie. Unlike many of his portraits, this work takes its name not from the sitter – who is unnamed and unknown – but from the hat that takes center stage in the work. The texture of the paint and the rough, rich surface it creates are modern and lend liveliness to the work. The expression and pallor of the unknown subject, her awkwardly posed hand, and the art nouveau flourish of her hat certainly owe a debt to Toulouse-Lautrec. The woman is a fin-de-siecle case study in her attire, her air of insouciance, and Klimt’s execution of the work.
Below the image is a black band with white text that reads “Gustav Klimt/The Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky Collections”, “October 22 – June 30, 2008”. Printed in white atop the black of the subject’s hat is the museum’s information “Neue Galerie/Museum for German and Austrian Art/ New York”, in the upper right hand corner. Both sides of this banners are identical.

These banners were displayed around Manhattan from October 22, 2007 through June 30, 2008 to promote the exhibition, Gustav Klimt: The Ronald S. Lauder and Serge Sabarsky Collections at the Neue Galerie in New York.
