Summary

Yves Saint Laurent often gave leading roles to feathers, animal prints, pelts and flowers in his Haute Couture designs. His Feather Dress is a chiffon dress with a tiger print and a coat with a firework display of ostrich, rooster and pheasant feathers in gold, yellow, red and brown. Saint Laurent designed a world famous array of outfits ranging from the simplest of little black dresses to very exotic evening gowns. Feather Dress is most definitely the latter, and the banner promoting this de Young exhibition of 130 YSL ensembles features the dress exquisitely.

Description

Yves Saint Laurent often gave leading roles to feathers, animal prints, pelts and flowers in his designs. The Feather Dress (number 82) was one of nearly 130 ensembles and sketches featured in the exhibition. It is a chiffon dress with a tiger print and a coat with a firework display of ostrich, rooster and pheasant feathers in gold, yellow, red and brown. This dress was introduced in the Fall-Winter 1990 collection.

Saint Laurent designed a world famous array of outfits ranging from the simplest of little black dresses to very exotic evening gowns. At just 21, he was named chief Haute Couture designer for the House of Dior by Christian Dior just days before his death. From that time in 1957 until his retirement in 2002, he revolutionized fashion for women by designing beautiful clothing that was comfortable to wear.

The front side of the banner features the magnificent Feather Dress on a model, rear view, against a deep magenta background. The opposite side is also deep magenta with ''Yves Saint Laurent'' in capital yellow letters (sideways vertical). On the bottom right, a fragment of the Feather Dress is shown. In the center, ''de Young'' appears horizontally in white type followed by two white leaves. The dates are in white along the bottom: ''11.1.08 – 04.05.09''.

Provenance

These banners were displayed around San Francisco from November 1, 2008 to April 5, 2009 to promote the exhibition organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Pierre Bergé–Yves Saint Laurent Foundation. The de Young Museum was the only U.S. venue.
