In the hands of Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986) a flower is not just a flower. Her close-up, detailed, vibrantly-colored images of flowers are sensual stories told through nature's beauty. Her flower paintings are among her most well-known works and one, "Red Hills with Flowers", is highlighted on 43 banners from The Art Institute of Chicago. Like O'Keeffe herself, these banners are bright, dramatic, and powerful - perfect to set your space abloom.

Known for the personal expressiveness of her works, Georgia O'Keeffe (1887 - 1986) combined color, form, and feeling in her paintings. Her love of nature and the landscapes of the American Southwest led her to create works of great power that pay homage to these places and things. One work which seamlessly combines these is her Red Hills with Flowers from 1937 in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.

O'Keeffe rejected the notion of her flowers as sexual metaphors - this is something she feels is created by the viewer who applies his own associations to the works, not hers. O'Keefe maintains:

"Nobody sees a flower, really, it is so small. We haven't time - and to see takes time like to have a friend takes time. If I could paint the flower exactly as I see it no one would see what I see because I would paint it small like the flower is small. So I said to myself - I'll paint what I see - what the flower is to me but I'll paint it big and they will be surprised into taking time to look at it - I will make even busy New Yorkers take time to see what I see of flowers. I made you take time to look at what I saw and when you took time to really notice my flower you hung all your own associations with flowers on my flower and you write about my flower as if I think and see what you think and see of the flower - and I don't."

O'Keeffe made flowers big, but this banners goes one step further, showing a detail of the painting enlarged in all its glory. Below this vibrant detail of the flower with the red hills behind it is a chartreuse band with magenta text that reads "The Art Institute of Chicago" and green text that reads "Sponsored by" with the Target logo in red. The other side is chartreuse with magenta and green text that reads "Free Evenings/Thursdays and Fridays/May 31 - August 31 . 5 - 9 pm".

These banners were displayed around Chicago throughout the summer of 2007 to promote free evenings at The Art Institute of Chicago.
