As the fashion industry boomed in Paris during the 1860s, so did the friendships and careers of the French Impressionists. Frédéric Bazille arrived in Paris in 1862 and was soon friends with some of the greats--Renoir, Monet, Sisley, and Manet. Bazille generously allowed the less prosperous Renoir to share his studio space, as he did for other artist friends in need. The painting Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1867) resulted from that collaboration. Pierre-Auguste Renoir depicts a dapper, albeit serious, Renoir dressed in the duds of the day, and appeared on the banner used to promote AIC’s Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity.
The birth of the fashion industry in Paris from about 1865 to 1885 provided endless inspiration for the Impressionist painters toying with color in the great outdoors. Impressionism, Fashion, and Modernity explored the dynamic interplay between art and fashion as Paris became the hotbed of fashion. Along with 75 paintings by Impressionist favorites such as Renoir and Monet, the exhibition included fashion portraits, period costumes, and fashion plates (illustrations of people wearing fashionable styles intended as a guide for dressmakers).
Frédéric Bazille and Pierre-Auguste Renoir both enrolled in Charles Gleyre's studio at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1862, and became close friends. Under the influence of Edouard Manet and Gustave Courbet, the two began figure painting en plein air in the style of the Impressionists. During this time, Bazille painted one of his best known works, The Pink Dress; posed for Monet's life-size, unfinished Le Dejeuner sur l'Herbe; and painted the portrait, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1867). Bazille was a generous friend, offering assistance when his friends needed space or materials. Both Monet and Renoir shared Bazille’s studio during the 1860s.
Pierre-Auguste Renoir is featured on the AIC banner used to promote the exhibition. The Art Institute logo appears at the top of the banner and Pierre-Auguste Renoir fills the balance. “Impressionism & Fashion” and “June 26-Sept 22” appear on the back side along with sponsors’ logos.
