Pierre-Auguste Renoir's "Luncheon of the Boating Party" gets an updated treatment on spectacular banners from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. 71 banners are available featuring a large-scale detail of the world-renowned painting. The banners give a contemporary edge to this Impressionist masterpiece and let you enjoy lunch along the Seine in your very own home.
While Washington, D.C.'s Phillips Collection was undergoing construction in 2003, the museum put together an unprecedented traveling exhibition of some of its most famous European masterpieces. The record-breaking four-year tour of these works ultimately was seen in seven U.S. cities as well as venues in Switzerland, Japan, Italy, and France.
Included among the masterpieces of artists like El Greco, Cézanne, Picasso, and Matisse was the painting featured on this banner by French Impressionist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), perhaps his most famous work. The banner features a detail of Renoir's world-famous Luncheon of the Boating Party, from 1880/81. Featuring a group of friends enjoying a leisurely afternoon along the Seine, the painting epitomizes Renoir's Impressionist style in both its subject matter and its execution. Capturing the fleeting afternoon sunlight as if the elaborately composed painting had been created in one brief moment, the complex painting appears effortless. The Phillips Collection offers a wonderful Who's Who in the Boating Party.
The front of the banner contains a large image of the painting with white text that reads "Renoir to Matisse". A purple band near the bottom has white text with the exhibition dates "Oct 17, 2004 - Jan 9, 2005". The other side of the banner is white with the museum's name "LACMA" in their stylized grey and purple font along with grey text that reads "experience the world through art".
These banners were displayed around Los Angeles from October 17, 2004 through January 9, 2005 to promote the exhibition Renoir to Matisse: The Eye of Duncan Phillips at the Los Angeles Museum of Art. The exhibition under various titles was also seen in the U.S. at The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Denver Art Museum, Phoenix Art Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, and the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville.
