Collection: Frank Lloyd Wright
Architect Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 - 1959) started his career under the
tutelage of Louis Sullivan, known for his famous dictum that "form follows
function". Wright took this to heart in his own work, going on to create
buildings of great functionality coupled with simple, beautiful forms. His
earliest houses had a horizontal thrust and natural materials that blended
the structures with their environments. He developed this over time into a
belief that all architectural forms should derive from nature, and he
adhered to this even in urban settings. When he died at age 92, he had
created 1,141 designs, of which 532 were built. Through his work, writings,
and teaching he has influenced an entire generation of designers and
architects, and continues to influence the way people live and use space.
