Collection: Katsukawa Shuncho

Katsukawa Shuncho (active about 1781-1801) produced some of the most beautiful prints of actors, landscapes, geisha, and erotica of the Edo period. He is known for the subtle coloration of his paintings called beni-girai (“avoiding red") leading to works that have a harmonious and understated palette. He gave up painting and printmaking in his later life to become a novelist.
