Marsden Hartley
Marsden Hartley (1877-1943) was at the center of the American modernist
movement and is considered to be one of the most talented early American
modernists. During Hartley's varied career as a painter, poet, and critic,
life and culture in America were changing dramatically. Unfortunately,
Hartley's work and personal life were not in synch with America's
conservative leanings during that time, and his work was unappreciated and
often rejected. His work has since been re-evaluated with the distance
afforded by time, and as with so many artists it is only posthumously that
he has been truly appreciated for his forward-looking work.
