While attending art school in Kansas City, Nick Cave (b. 1959) also studied dance at Alvin Ailey schools, both in Kansas City and New York. He earned his BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute and his MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.
Cave now teaches in the Fiber Arts Program as Chairman of the Fashion Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. About his art, Cave says, he is working toward what I am leaving behind." He teaches his students and practices in his own work, the idea that art making holds the possibility for acting as a vehicle for change on a larger, global scale."
